For Patients

What is contact dermatitis/allergic dermatitis?

Allergic Contact Dermatitis patients present with an eczematous reaction, synonymous with the appearance of contact eczema. ACD is induced by contact allergens, which result in a delayed type hypersensitive immune response (Type IV) and is T-cell mediated. (Read more) (collapsable text box)

Haptens which are commonly known as Contact Allergens, are generally of low molecular weight which can penetrate and then diffuse beneath the epidermal barrier of the patients skin causing irritation, this can ultimately lead to sensitisation following repeated exposure to the allergen.

Clinically controlled commercial allergens are widely available and enable controlled testing of such sensitivity with precise concentrations of Allergens in a clinical environment – this test is commonly described at Patch Testing.
